“Sky-high Tea Picking & Hand-rolled Tea Making in a 150-year-old Traditional House @ 1 Hour from City Center”
◯Location:
Kanagawa Prefecture
Sagamihara City, Midori-ku
Fujino Station
◯Experience:
Experience nature in Fujino, a rural area just one hour away from Tokyo city center. Why not try your hand at traditional hand-rolled tea making?
Hand-rolled tea, created by human hands rather than machines, has become a rare and valuable commodity. However, merely 50 years ago, it was customary for Japanese people to grow, pick, and hand-roll their own tea.
In this experience, we will make hand-rolled tea using traditional methods, utilizing a roasting furnace (hoiro) in a 150-year-old traditional house. A hoiro is a furnace similar to an irori, with charcoal placed under the floor and bamboo baskets, wooden frames, or iron plates covered with Japanese paper on top. This has been used since ancient times to dry tea leaves, medicinal herbs, and seaweed.
The tea leaves we will use are handpicked from the sky-high tea fields, a 20-minute hike from the traditional house. Enjoy the refreshing scent of pesticide-free tea leaves, carefully cultivated with time and effort. If the weather is good, you might even catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji from the sky-high tea fields!
Also, look forward to a countryside lunch using the freshly picked tea leaves!
